Hey everyone,
There was a recent Optus data breach here in Australia, which has got me thinking, That nothing is safe and nothing is foolproof, There are some ways you can remain safe online though and if you follow these tips then I'm sure you be better off, Nothing is ever a 100% when it comes to anything online unfortunately but these tips can help.
1: Use A Strong Password
Using symbols such as "@@" is a little harder to crack when it comes to brute forcing software, of course once again it's not 100%, and if an algorithm is programmed a certain way you can still be hacked but it's much safer and takes a bit longer to crack than say "myturtle99" for example.
It's also common sense not to use passwords such as "qwerty" or "password" they are not decent passwords and go against what a password is supposed to be intended for.
2: Have Two Bank Accounts For Separate Things
One way to avoid being breached or hacked is to have one bank account/card for all your bills and online stuff and one bank account/card for all your personal EFTPOS / in-store shopping and keep most of your money in the EFTPOS / in-store account.
That way if a website database does get leaked it will only be your bill card that gets leaked which you can cancel and replace, If the attacker does use your card by chance then you won't lose your main money.
3: Never Reveal Your Password
Most website databases (well decent websites anyway) will have your password encrypted in this case if they need to get into your account they can do so via their administration tools if they are really a staff member representing that service or site, THEY WILL NEVER ASK FOR YOUR PASSWORD!
So never give out your password even if they claim to work for the service/site or if they are a friend or family member, it does not matter, If you must share an account then make sure that the account is for that purpose and you two don't give it out to anyone else, If it's your personal account then only you should have access to it.
4: Don't Reuse The Same Password
Let's face it, We all probably have done this, It's not a good practice though even though the human memory can't remember thousands of passwords,
If your password was involved in a data leak it's definitely a very good idea to never use this password again, You can check this online by a few websites such as
Even though websites encrypt passwords it really depends on the encryption mechanism they use as some can be easily transferred to plain text, Not all encryption methods though, But as I said people will always find a way to try and beat the system in some form.
5: Stay Vigilant
Things are constantly changing that's everything in this world inluding the internet, If you hear that a site that you've joined (even if you don't activily log in) has been breached then it's a good idea to change your password on every other site!
It is also a good idea to enable two factor auth, You don't have to as it's your accounts but it's recomend as part of Staying Vigllant.
We hope these have helped you in staying safe online and with us :)
If you are a new user and use Optus as your provider or been involved in any other data breach then we urge you to please not use your old passwords here as this is putting your account at risk, Which is then extra work for us, We are busy people!
