Grand Theft Hamlet is an innovative new documentary shot entirely within Grand Theft Auto V. Directed by Sam Crane and Pinny Grylls, the film tells the story of two struggling actors who attempt to stage Shakespeare’s Hamlet during the COVID-19 lockdowns.

Using only in-game footage from Rockstar’s acclaimed 2013 title, the film has already made waves, winning the documentary competition at this year’s SXSW and receiving high praise from critics on the festival circuit. Clocking in at 89 minutes, Grand Theft Hamlet will debut on the streaming platform Mubi in 2025, with a theatrical release also in the works.

The official website provides insight into the story: “It’s January 2021, and the UK has entered its third lockdown, leaving theaters shuttered. Sam and Mark, two actors grappling with personal challenges, struggle to find purpose. Mark, isolated and living alone, faces growing loneliness, while Sam worries about supporting his family. To escape their frustrations, the duo plunges into the chaotic yet beautiful virtual world of Grand Theft Auto Online. Amid car chases and shootouts, they also discover moments of peace, wandering through fields of digital wildflowers. One day, they stumble upon a virtual theater—and hatch a plan: why not stage Hamlet inside the game?”

The filmmakers see their project as both timely and thought-provoking. “As more aspects of life shift online—even something as traditional as theater—we wanted to explore the possibilities of storytelling in this space,” Crane and Grylls shared. “We asked ourselves: Can a centuries-old narrative find new meaning inside a digital world? And how will audiences respond to the fusion of Hamlet and the vibrant, chaotic landscape of Los Santos?”

Beyond the novelty of staging Hamlet in a video game, Grand Theft Hamlet pushes the boundaries of virtual filmmaking. The duo filmed using GTA V’s in-game phone camera, capturing close-ups and sweeping cinematic shots. “This tool allowed us to weave moments of intimacy and lyricism into the wild and unpredictable environment,” they explained.

Although Mubi has not announced an exact release date, the film will hit both streaming and theaters early next year. For now, the U.K. premiere is set for October 15, followed by another screening on October 20.

As of now, Rockstar Games, the developer behind GTA V, has not commented on the documentary.
